Ranting Nonsense

This is where all of Ian's rants go to live out the rest of their HTML based lives. It's a good place, where they're hopefully visited often, and if anything, fed comments on a more regular basis. I love and care for my rants, and want to know they're in a good place.

So, if I've ranted about it, you can find it here. I will update it as often as I rant.

The Problems With Scale
Human beings do care about what we do and how we affect things; but if you make the problem big enough we end up too focused on what is in front of us to see the big picture. I (ironically?) try to focus in on this problem we have with scale.

Expertise
My thoughts on the institution of "expertise" and how it's become less a credential and more a suspicious title for me.

The Cost of Education
I recently started looking at going back to school, and then came across an episode from Frontline about for-profit schools. This rant talks about the institution of for-profit education from my own experience and how I think for-profit schools can be successful...not just profitable.

Fuh, Fuh...FOCUS!
I'm trying harder than ever to get my career off the runway, and one of the biggest problems I have is being weighed down with all the things I want to do. This rant reflects on why it's difficult for me to focus and how I intend to solve it.

Valentine's Day 2009 - Dating
Having gone to a "Chick Flick", I wondered why it is that men allow themselves to get dragged to these things. It didn't take long to figure out.

Vote Like It Matters
In a year when election news is on everyone's mind and somehow everything is hanging in the balance on November 4th, whether that be the wars abroad, a crumbling economy, or our very livelihoods being threatened; I weigh in on why educated voting is more important than ever.

Let's Talk About Sex
How did sex and love become the tomato/tomato comparison that it is today? How in the hell could I go almost five years avoiding the subject of sex anyways? Time to settle this with a hot and steamy rant.

Valentines 2008 - Paths
What is the best way to live your life, alone or with another? What's the point of living with or without someone anyways? This year I talk about two things on the internet that changed my perspective a little on the whole "love" thing, and made me redefine "home".

Growing Up
Musings on growing older, and how I wonder about the "what if's" from my past.

Resolutions on a Budget
I like the idea of resolving to better yourself, but I don't like the idea of helping others more than you help yourself to do it. Here's some of my suggestions and ideas on making the act of achieving New Years Resolutions a more fulfilling and hopefully more successful one.

Lessons Learned - 2007
I didn't make it into the Esquire "What I've Learned" issue, so I decided to provide my submission as a rant. It's about Groundhog Day, and being a better person.

Self Service
The self help industry is huge. I'm finding that for as much help I think I've gotten from different books over the years, others take the message more seriously...often to the extent of changing their lives dramatically. Whether that may be for good or ill, I try to cut through the miracle hype Self Help usually displays to get to the real fruit...plain, simple advice.

The Creative Bottom Line
Sometimes, sacrificing luxury to do what you want to do is what makes it all worth it in the end - hence the term, "Starving Artist". In this rant I think about what that means, and what the motivations are behind the creator who puts his or her craft above their own comfort.

A Muggle's Thanks
There are so few amazing and life changing experiences to be had out there, and I just finished the last book of one of them. What charm was cast on me to make me so lovesick over these books though? Can Veela also write books?

The Dark Waters of the Workplace
If any of you have a job, you probably have dealt with gossiping and back stabbing politics. You could have worked at KFC or IBM, it doesn't matter. How does it work though, and is it foolish to try to remove it from the workplace?

May 15, 2007
The Good, The Bad, and The Difference
Sometimes the difference between Good and Bad is simply a matter of perspective. How would it change things if we all understood that a little better?

Making Work a Bit More Interesting
What happens when Ian is tired and hopped up on coffee and energy drinks for a whole week. By the way, one of the things I forgot to mention in this post was that I changed my name to Crispy McBacon. Just thought you'd like to know.

The House of Cards
Debt not only should be erased from our statements but erased from our way of living day to day. We live in an age where debt is acceptable to have and a way of life, and we need to evaluate why that is and if we can remain comfortable with it.

The Talk Around Town
Gossip is something I try to take on a grain of salt since I rarely see gossip as helpful. In this rant I explain the mechanics of why gossip is out there and what it does for us and the people it targets.

Happy Holiday?
Another Valentine's Day, and I lay down some reasons on why these things (ie- love) are really crappy for most of us. Also my 200th post - woot!

It's that time of year for shopping, decorating, and singing. Knock back your eggnog and have a Merry Christmas!

...Who Need Enemies? (part II)
Part two of a three part set of posts about friends. There are reasons people become and stay friends, and I've given a few you might not totally be aware of.

...Who Need Enemies? (part I)
Part one of a three part set of posts about friends. I tried to break down how I think we interact with friends, or people that we are comfortable with, to a subconscious level. It's very much like watching Jazz to me, and it's strange to think that we do it without even realizing it.

Ladies and Gentlemen: The Nubbins
This may be the beginning of the internet's next big meme...or it might just be me hoping to justify the desire I have to start random rumors about people just for laughs. You decide...I'll be telling people that my brother was a child film star regardless of what happens.

EnBlog Halloween 2006 - Providence by Collin
Scary and/or disgusting stories every Halloween? Unless my enemies have finally made their final move against me (you think I'm joking, don't you?), I'll do my best to make that come true year after year. Otherwise, enjoy it while it lasts!

The Bug To Blog
I don't know how many "Why We Blog" posts there are in the world, but add one more to the pile. This take attempts to categorize the bloggers out there to shed light on them via the type of blog they maintain.

Perfection: The Myth of Pygmalion and Galatea
Two months off from ranting didn't mean I ran out of material, it just meant I didn't have time to type it! For this one; Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I'm going to tell you why that is.

Hello Neighbor!
Some people are lucky and have neighbors that introduce themselves when people move into the neighborhood. Others are less lucky and have to deal with neighbors that rip blank pieces of their own paper to shreds on your lawn in fits of undeserved rage.

Last Thoughts
Dealing with death and dying. Perhaps one of the more, if not the most, serious posts I've written so far, Last Thoughts never really gained the response I was hoping for. I think, if anything, the lack of response just showed how taboo the topic can be.

Mar 26, 2006
The Lies We Tell Ourselves
The Lies We Tell Ourselves is definitely one of my favorite rants. I really like the idea of stripping away the curtains of deceit that we all live with, and essentially facing our everyday hypocrisy in the open. Whether or not that's actually possible though is something for another post to deal with!

Drawing a Line On Nudity
When an art teacher gets suspended for recommending figure drawing classes to a student, I started typing this rant on over-reaction.

Revisiting Old Theories on Love.
What else would I write on Valentines Day except a post about love?

The Sanctity of Marriage
One very long tangent on marriage. Originally it started off talking about "convenience" marriages, but I started talking about the whole institution. Hopefully there's something worth knowing in it.

Taking Things Seriously
A giant asteroid is on the path for earth...for real. In about 30 years or so we might see the thing coming down on us, and I try to put it all in perspective. I'm also proud to say that this is one of the few posts that has received outside linkage. Thanks to those of you who found me worthy of note!

Common citizens fight the man in court, and I wonder why more aren't capable of doing it.

Thoughts on Beauty
People think I'm pretty, but I have to be modest about it otherwise people will also think I'm stuck up about it. So I tell a tale of one day where the compliments flowed like water from the tap, and try to put it all in perspective.

Yummy Yams for Your Y.....Yeah.
Who says I need to stay on topic? The body of this rant has nothing to do with Yams. Instead one half is about Harry Potter, and the other is about iPods being fashionable.

Time magazine calls me a Twixter. Do you have what it takes to be one too? More importantly, do you have a cooler name than "twixter"?
