Employees Only - Replacement Bulb

Merry Christmas Everyone!

It's been a very busy fall and winter, but I made sure to create a Christmas card for my clients, friends and family like I always do. If you didn't get a card, here's the illustration for being nice enough to visit EN•blog on Christmas Day (Thanks, but really?). This year's card owes a big thanks to my big brother for helping me nail down the caption; I spent weeks trying to think of a good caption for it and he had it down in five seconds flat! Go figure. :)

Even though I have today off from my other job, I'm still in the thick of things with my freelance work, and I'll be working up to the last minute of 2012 most likely. When 2013 and all her free time comes around, I'm getting the band back together, updating my portfolio, and trying to remember what rest and relaxation is all about. Until then, I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We should all be thankful that the Mix is still creating comics while I'm in the trenches. Thanks Mix!

Employees Only - A Tough Day

I'm busy...but not that busy. At least, I don't think so. Admittedly one of the really tough things about paid work is that sometimes you can't really justify working on the other stuff that you do for fun, like this comic. I wish it wasn't the case, but it is.

When I find the time to make comics, I will - promise.

Employees Only - Don't Quit Your Day Job

Speaking of day jobs...I have two or three right now. That's why the updates are few and far between. I just gotta do a comic anyway though...it drives me crazy not to. So if you're getting ticked at me for not updating, just remember how I feel!

Eventually I hope to have the schedule sorted out and start cranking out comics like nothing else, but I have yet to figure it out. Thanks for sticking with me!

Employees Only - Font of Knowledge

Hey I'm back! So it looks like Learning Monster's bleak and grim teachings have finally caught up with him...

I'm generally of the opinion that ignorance is bliss, so maybe Learning Monster isn't to blame for revealing the stark and dark truth of the world around us. Or, maybe he's just a sadist...a furry, cuddly sadist.

Employees Only - TMI

http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/123480

I like the idea that Ben Franklin let his friend bring stolen dead bodies into his London basement to study and  bury, and 200 years later we're all OK with it. It's just an interesting fact!

Employees Only - Back to School

Ahh....Susie and the Learning Monster. I'm going to start a small plot line with them today, so stay tuned!

A bunch of kids are back to elementary and high school today, and if they're anything like me, the learning part is hardly the reason they didn't want to go back.

What's odd is that now that I'm in my 30's, I get wistful thinking about those days... until I read my journals and realize the only reason I didn't go batty back then was because I was running on 50% hormones, 25% caffeine, 20% actual intellectual thought, and the remaining 5% was probably carcinogens and pollutants from the 40 year old drinking fountains on campus. So basically I had the barest comprehension of what the actual reality of secondary school was, and probably still is - convincing yourself that things will be awesome when you're out of school.

Really, that's all it boils down to. You go to school so you can not go back to school. You go to it so you can leave. The only people who don't get to say that are the teachers, but they get to look forward to you leaving.

All this being said, I do actually miss learning stuff. Great teachers made school worth going to for me, so here's hoping all of you get to experience that this year (provided you can focus).

Employees Only - Size Matters

Now that I'm going into story based comics, there's really not too much for me to say down here any more. I'll still drop some info whenever a randomly placed non-story comic makes it way onto the site, but until then just picture me twiddling my fingers and shrugging at you when you look down here.

Employees Only - Part Time 4

So there you go - the main character is ingested by a dinosaur! Or...Ian is killed by the physical representation of inspiration, which happens to be embodied by an extinct animal surrounded by "whimsy", who just has the job as a part time gig. If you read the comic so far you would have known that though...

...

OK, so my comic has become rather obscure and impenetrable. It's been suggested many times that I scrap the comic altogether and start over, but for some reason I've grown attached to these characters. It has always been my intention to make something everyone else also enjoys, but apparently I'm better at amusing myself than I am figuring out how to do that. I've gone a little too far to even attempt to dig myself out at this point, so I'm just going to keep wrapping duct tape around this boat until it floats.

That means different comics - more story lines, different approaches, and probably more of the same impenetrable humor that you, my five readers, have grown to groan over. I'm also taking on more comic tasks aside from Employees Only, and I hope to share that all with you if I can. Everything from freelance gigs that I pick up (yes, incredibly, people do sometimes pay me to make comics) and my long awaited graphic novel ambitions.

And yeah, what the hell, I'll make pig posts too.

Employees Only - Part Time 3

So, by now you've probably picked up where this is going (assuming you know who Inspirasaurus Rex is). What you may not know is that I'm also hinting at a new direction for the comic as a whole... something that will make Employees Only start to make sense as a title (finally). Stay tuned and we'll both see if I can pull it off!

Employees Only - Part Time 2

I was actually halted from doing this comic by physical questions such as, "How would a T-Rex get inside the train? Pay at the turnstile? Go unnoticed by everyone - let alone this guy reading the paper? Etc. etc. etc.?

I'm actually more puzzled by what he would read in the funny pages. I haven't read the newspaper in years.

Employees Only - Part Time

Since I couldn't think of any single day gags I decided to draw up another continuity for a cheap laugh at the end. Hopefully the process will unlock wonderful gems along the way...like a stegosaurus named Stu! Or a Tyrannosaurus with a wrist watch...how can he even look at the time?

Classic! Where's my award?

Employees Only - Hell (The Mix Guest Comic)

Well, well, well...a guest comic by none other than the Mix! I think the comic more than speaks for itself, so I shall not sully it with my crude attempt at commentary. Just bask in its glow and then proceed with having a great day!

As always, guest comics are much appreciated as they allow me to do things like drive across the country, sleep at cheap motels and eat more drive-thru food than should be allowed. Although the Mix is now beginning an eight year path toward double doctor-dom, I have little doubt that his brand of comic artistry will once again grace this website...so don't turn that dial!

Thanks Mix - and good luck in Med School!

Employees Only - Pure Imagination

Turns out they have an Abercrombie & Fitch too. Doesn't that just take the magical myster-i-ness of a place down a couple notches?

28 June '12 -  OK, so having finally visited Hershey I can say that I'm completely wrong with the comic and the comment. Hershey does have a K-Mart and stuff like Staples...but no big box store, or upscale clothing store. Given the fact that no one bothered to tell me sooner I'm guessing my audience in Hershey doesn't mind!

Employees Only - Chocolate Pals

Naturally I'd want to put together a whole Willy Wonka-esque comic that is littered with M&M's being snarky while that Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs bird is in the corner OD'ing on Quik dust...but that isn't allowed in copyright land. What good is it having the Mix going to med school in Hershey, PA when you can't milk it for every sweet drop it's worth? I want Oompa-Loompas singing about anatomy classes and Veruca Salt in a pair of scrubs performing a Tracheal intubation.

I guess I'll keep on trying to figure this one out.

Employees Only - Drive 'Em Wild

I actually do wear button down shirts opened up so I can stand in the wind with the shirt blowing behind me. I haven't actually gotten any ladies with this technique yet because there never seems to be an available socket to plug in the fan before they are distracted by other moves that apparently drive them wild.

Some day though...some day.

Employees Only - The Lair

By the looks of it, the spiders in my brother's carport are saving up for winter or something. Every time I go out there I'm a little taken aback. But then I remember they're catching insects I'd rather not have inside the house and I say, "Oh...well as long as you don't start capturing hobbits." But I don't know if they're on board with that idea to be honest.

Employees Only - Road Hazards

It's really nice to bring back some nonsense and random violence to the comic.

...OK, well that never really disappeared. I suppose I mean it's nice to just bring in a random comic as I take a small break from the Space comics. Speaking of which, I've been thinking of what to call them...the idea of "Space Case" seems good, but let me know if you have any suggestions!

Employees Only - The Radioactive Turbo Sloth - Part 5 - Gratuity

A thrilling cliff hanger! Pizza delivery guy...cubed! Harvey the Radioactive Turbo Sloth....introduced! A floating bunch of bananas...talking! I plan on revisiting this cast at a later time, but for now I need to return to the regular scheduled nonsense I was doing before. This isn't the end of my space saga...I just need to figure out where it's going!

It's been forever since the last post - I have no good excuses. I'm just going to try to finish these as often as I can and leave it at that. So, see you next time!

Employees Only - The Radioactive Turbo Sloth - Part 2

click to see the full sized image!

The plot continues into part 2! I'm enjoying doing these, but they are a little more work. Thankfully though I've had some decent ideas pop into my head while I'm working on them...and once I remember those I'll be ready for when Employees Only continues with its regularly scheduled randomness.

Oh, and I discovered it's a little tricky to depict holograms in black and white artwork. Hopefully it comes across, but I guess I'm capable of trying something else if people tell me otherwise.

Employees Only - The Radioactive Turbo Sloth - Part I

Click to see full sized image!

The Mix's birthday is coming up, so I decided to make him a comic series based on a drawing he gave me for his newest character idea. True enough, I'm also doing this because I can't afford to buy him anything.

I think his character's future hairdo is gift enough to be honest.

The Inchworm

The last comic I worked on at my workshop last month was this on-the-spot piece that I had to create from a word which I pulled out of the hat. My word was "inchworm" and this was what I did in about two and a half hours (inks only).

About a third of the way through I began thinking to myself, "Have I seen this before?" and I immediately went over to Scott McCloud and told him I thought I may be redrawing someone else's comic. He said just go for it anyway. His advice was that even if someone else has already done it, I'd do it differently. So if you have seen this before (or created it) please let me know and I'll attribute my comic to you. Otherwise I'm hoping I just was being overly paranoid...because I am a little proud of it.

Hope you like it!

The Inchworm Preview

I'm really tired of not getting the comic done for you guys, but here I am, yet again saying it's going to be tomorrow.

Just to prove I have something, I took a screen shot of one of the panels. I may decide to change the colors, but for right now hopefully this will pique your interest enough to encourage not dropping me altogether.

See you tomorrow!

Employees Only - A Party Up In Here

100 Comics of Employees Only!

Needless to say there's A LOT of references to the past comics in this guy, so please forgive all the inside jokes. It's sort of sad to think about how bizarre this comic will seem to someone who's reading Employees Only for the first time and sees this comic; I mean, there's a tyrannosaurus surrounded by whimsy, standing behind a talking bison...

I think I might come back later and add links to the previous comics to save everyone the trouble of trying to understand this on their own. Until then, I'm a proud parent showing off his bizarre children and if you have any idea about what's going on I'm happy to consider you a fan.

Thank you!

Update 3/3/12 - I've tagged a lot of the characters in past comics, so you can check the labels and click a character's name to see the comics they've appeared in. It should work pretty well for everyone except Ian and the Mix, because they're in a lot and I didn't have time yet. Still though, happy comic reading!

Employees Only - Master of Karate

The Mix is currently doing the med school interview thing, which is very cool but also a tiny bit scary. We can only hope that his training so far has prepared him for the real world.

We should also hope the real world is prepared for him.

McCloud Workshop - The 16 Panel Life

I spent last weekend in Los Angeles attending an amazing workshop by Scott McCloud, who's well known in comic circles for his wonderful dissections of the comic form in several books. When I heard about the workshop last October I had signed up for it immediately, and the only complaint I could possibly have about my experience was that it only lasted two days!

I came away with a sense that I have a long way to go to really understand comics as well as I should, and I'm very glad to have McCloud's books and his numerous recommendations on hand as I begin to take on a bigger project this year. I've never been so amped to work on comics, and it's a real thrill to think about what I have planned!

Above is one of my projects from the workshop, which was to fill 16 panels with my life story. There's a lot about the panels that may escape people who don't know me well, but I'm still very proud to show it off regardless. Hopefully I managed to convey the basic moments well enough to give you a good idea of what happened, because I don't plan on explaining the events in each panel (sorry!). Still though, feel free to let me know what you think!

Employees Only - If The Shoe Fits

One of the things that's changed since I was a kid buying running shoes at the mall is that shoes can be scientifically calibrated to the individual. This is actually pretty cool, but add the cost of special moisture wicking socks, ultra light weight shorts, endless amounts of energy gels, bars, drinks and training tools like GPS trackers; you'll start thinking that the old pair of $15 dollar Nikes you have getting dusty in the closet is looking pretty good.

Employees Only - Personal Best

So far training has been full of ups and downs. I think with anything difficult you have to grab onto the little victories along the way. In my case I have come to realize I can totally kick my 16 year old ass in distance running, which is something...I guess.

Employees Only - Training Day

There are such things in this world, that people actually sign up for, and pay for the privilege of participating in. One such event is within a month's time, and I find myself pushing my body and resolve to get ready for the damned thing. Not because I'm a guy with anything to prove, but because my friends asked me to join their team.

Then I found out that I couldn't join their team when I signed up because it was a company team.

So, now I'm doing it because there will be comics to make about it; in which case I suppose my pain is potentially your pleasure...

...as long as I don't break my fingers next month.

Employees Only - The Mix Guest Comic

When the Mix offered to do this week's comic, I knew I'd get top grade material, so naturally I jumped at the offer.

Incidentally I will also be doing a comic, but this offering will hopefully tide you over until I actually finish it.

Employees Only - A New Me

Priorities tend to be more exciting when they're not real. I honestly think that I've given more dedication to finishing video games than I have to most other things in my life. It's probably lucky that I never really enjoyed things like MMOs otherwise I may have never graduated from college.

Despite that, I'm good on the resolutions front this year. I don't want to jinx it or anything, but things are going alright, and I'm happy to keep on doing what I've been doing. And no, I'm not just playing video games (although a controller tends to find its way into my hands from time to time).

Here's hoping you find yourself in a similar situation as we start off 2012; and if you're diving into an ambitious resolution to make a better you, best of luck!
